A review of A J Busby & Son by Edmund elmhirst written on Sunday 2nd of August 2020
We situated in Norwich, Norfolk and shop at Sainsburys - today, Aug.2nd we ate the most sumptious of Strawberries I have ever tasted - I managed to find the box with your name on - A J Busby Ltd. - the variety - Driscoll's Amesti - they were bought from our Thorpe St. Andrew Sainsbury's on friday 31st. July 2020.
They were absolutely wonderful in taste and huge ! Reminded me of my days as a boy in the wolds of Lincolnshire, The Grove, West Ashby, Horncastle - the Grove of manorial size at which the Elmhirst Family had lived at for 200 odd years ! During World War 2 the Grove was requisitioned by the Army with commisioned officers in residence there - other ranks, billetted in the village.
I lived in London in the fifties but most of my school holidays I was sent back to West Ashby. I always remember the strawberries in my summer holidays - grown by the gardeners in beds of straw - the variety, Royal Sovereign - brought in for afternoon tea ! Happy days !.
